Van 9 tot en met 13 september stond de wereld van het mastersroeien in het teken van Bled. Het Sloveense meer, omringd door de Julische Alpen en met zijn iconische eilandkerkje en middeleeuwse kasteel op de rots, vormde het decor voor de World Rowing Masters Regatta 2026. Voor wie het nog niet wist: Bled is geen onbekende in de internationale roeiwereld. Het meer was al gastheer van WK’s roeien in 1966, 1979, 1989 en 2011, EK’s in 1956 en 2023, en meerdere World Rowing Cups. Kortom, een baan met geschiedenis en een reputatie om trots op te zijn.

En dit jaar was Willem III daar met een flinke afvaardiging bij.

Een regatta van ongekende omvang

Om een idee te geven van de schaal: er stonden ruim 7.000 inschrijvingen op naam, verdeeld over 889 clubs uit de hele wereld. Vijf dagen lang werd er van zonsopgang tot zonsondergang geraced over acht banen, met woensdag tot en met zaterdag de reguliere programma’s en op zondag de altijd sfeervolle gemengde nummers als afsluiter. Het weer gooide af en toe roet in het eten, waardoor het programma op de openingsdag zelfs naar voren werd geschoven, maar dat mocht de pret niet drukken.

Bij een mastersregatta van deze omvang wordt er niet gewerkt met voorwedstrijden en halve finales zoals je die kent van de Olympische Spelen. In plaats daarvan worden de inschrijvingen per onderdeel verdeeld in leeftijdscategorieën, en race elke boot maar één keer: direct in de finale van zijn categorie. Praktisch, eerlijk, en het zorgt ervoor dat iedereen daadwerkelijk aan bod komt in plaats van al na een voorronde naar huis te moeten.

Willem III op het podium

En op dat water lieten onze roeiers zich meermaals van hun beste kant zien. Bij deze mastersregatta staat alleen de winnaar van elke leeftijdscategorie op het podium en ontvangt alleen die boot een medaille. Met dat gegeven in het achterhoofd mag het resultaat van Willem III er zijn: maarliefst vier keer ging een boot van de vereniging met goud naar huis, in de mannen 1x, de mannen 8+, de mannen 4- en nogmaals de mannen 4-, dit keer in een andere leeftijdscategorie en samenstelling. Vier podiumplekken, vier medailles op één regatta: een resultaat om trots op te zijn en een teken van de sterke vorm waarin de vereniging dit weekend verkeerde.

Daarnaast bleef Willem III in maarliefst elf races net naast het podium staan met een sterke tweede plaats, verspreid over bijna alle bootklassen: van de 1x tot de 2x, de 4x, de 4- en de 8+, zowel in de reguliere als in de gemengde nummers op zondag. Met zes derde plaatsen erbij kwam de teller op 32, door Willem III, gevaren finales maar liefst 21 keer uit op een plek in de top drie. Dat is een topdrie-percentage van twee op de drie races: een resultaat dat laat zien hoe breed de kracht binnen de vereniging zit, niet in één of twee sterke boten, maar over de hele linie.

Opvallend was ook hoe vaak Willem III de handen ineensloeg met andere verenigingen. In diverse nummers, met name in de grotere boten zoals de 8+, werd samengewerkt met onder meer Het Spaarne, De Hoop en Cornelis Tromp Hilversum. Dat soort samenwerkingsverbanden is typerend voor het mastersroeien: het haalt het beste uit meerdere clubs naar boven en levert regelmatig de mooiste resultaten op, zoals ook in Bled bleek.

Meer dan alleen sport

Wie er zelf bij was, weet dat een regatta als deze om meer draait dan alleen de uitslagen. De sfeer op en rond het water, het weerzien met roeivrienden uit binnen- en buitenland, de gezamenlijke inspanning in de aanloop naar de start en het gevoel van voldoening bij het passeren van de finish: dát is waar het mastersroeien om draait. Bled bood daarvoor het perfecte decor.

Met vier podiumplaatsen en medailles, en 21 noteringen in de top drie op 32 gevaren finales, heeft Willem III laten zien dat de vereniging niet alleen breed en gezellig is, maar ook scherp aan de start kan staan wanneer het erop aankomt. Een prestatie die de hele club met recht trots mag maken, en een mooie aanmoediging om ook volgend jaar weer massaal af te reizen naar de volgende internationale regatta. Petje af voor iedereen die in Bled het Willem III-shirt heeft gedragen!

Willem III Shines on the Waters of Bled

From 9 to 13 September, the world of masters rowing was all about Bled. The Slovenian lake, surrounded by the Julian Alps and home to its iconic island church and medieval castle perched on the rock, provided the backdrop for the 2026 World Rowing Masters Regatta. For those who didn’t know: Bled is no stranger to international rowing. The lake has previously hosted World Championships in 1966, 1979, 1989 and 2011, European Championships in 1956 and 2023, and several World Rowing Cups. In short, a course with history and a reputation to be proud of.

And this year, Willem III was there with a strong delegation.

A Regatta of Unprecedented Scale

To give an idea of the scale: there were more than 7,000 entries, spread across 889 clubs from all over the world. For five days, racing took place from sunrise to sunset across eight lanes, with the regular programme running from Wednesday through Saturday and Sunday reserved for the always lively mixed events as the grand finale. The weather occasionally threw a spanner in the works, even pushing the schedule forward on opening day, but that didn’t dampen the spirit.

At a masters regatta of this scale, there are no heats or semi-finals as you’d know them from the Olympic Games. Instead, entries in each event are divided into age categories, and every boat races only once: straight into the final of its category. Practical, fair, and it ensures everyone actually gets to race instead of being sent home after a qualifying round.

Willem III on the Podium

And on that water, our rowers showed their best form time and again. At this masters regatta, only the winner of each age category makes the podium, and only that boat receives a medal. With that in mind, Willem III’s result is one to celebrate: no fewer than four times a Willem III boat took home gold, in the men’s 1x, the men’s 8+, the men’s 4-, and once more in the men’s 4-, this time in a different age category and lineup. Four podium spots, four medals in a single regatta: a result to be proud of, and a sign of the strong form the club was in that weekend.

On top of that, Willem III finished just off the podium with a strong second place in no fewer than eleven races, spread across almost every boat class: from the 1x to the 2x, the 4x, the 4- and the 8+, in both the regular events and the mixed events on Sunday. Add six third-place finishes, and out of 32 finals rowed by Willem III, the club finished in the top three no fewer than 21 times. That’s a top-three rate of two out of every three races: a result that shows just how much strength the club has across the board, not concentrated in one or two standout boats, but spread throughout.

It was also striking how often Willem III joined forces with other clubs. In several events, particularly in the larger boats such as the 8+, crews were formed together with clubs including Het Spaarne, De Hoop and Cornelis Tromp Hilversum. This kind of collaboration is typical of masters rowing: it brings out the best across multiple clubs and regularly produces the finest results, as was again the case in Bled.

More Than Just Sport

Anyone who was there knows that a regatta like this is about more than just the results. The atmosphere on and around the water, reuniting with rowing friends from home and abroad, the shared effort in the build-up to the start, and the sense of satisfaction crossing the finish line: that’s what masters rowing is all about. Bled provided the perfect setting for exactly that.

With four podium finishes and medals, and 21 top-three results out of 32 finals rowed, Willem III has shown that the club isn’t just wide-ranging and sociable, but also sharp at the start when it counts. An achievement the whole club can rightly be proud of, and a fine incentive to travel in force again next year to the next international regatta.
