Gents geroei

Deze alliteratie vond in het weekeind van 9/10 mei plaats. Met een overvol bepakte en behangen botenwagen zijn alle jeugd en wedstrijd junioren roeiers naar de camping in Gent verhuisd om veel lol te maken. Met alle roeiers samen zijn de bootjes supersnel opgeriggerd, hier en daar zelfs met levende schragen. Na dit zware werk kon er een lekker potje geroeid worden in veel verschillende samenstellingen.
Onze jeugd toppers knalden iedere keer 1000m over de baan, de wedstrijd junioren hebben allemaal net iets meer dan 2000m gevaren. Echt waar en hoe dit zit, tja…. 😊. De heats vlogen ons om de oren die ieder een wedstrijd op zich waren. Per nummer werd de einduitslag bepaald op basis van alle geroeide tijden in de heats. Vermeldenswaard is dat Loïs van Dis beide dagen het meisjes U19 veld wist te winnen in de skiff. Een hele knappe prestatie in dit internationale veld. Een andere topprestatie kwam van de begeleiders van de jeugdroeiers: met vijf ouders negen skiffs op de baan leggen in 15 minuten! En last but not least, onze jongste wedstrijdroeiers Veerle Booij en Lynn Fontein hebben samen geblikt.
Bij alle wedstrijden zijn de Willem 3’ ers hard aangemoedigd door elkaar, rennend langs de baan, vanuit de fijne tent, maar altijd met veel lawaai. Van al dit gedoe krijg je trek, maar Sue had weer voor een heerlijke BBQ gezorgd, echt geweldig.
Na een (hier en daar) korte nacht waren de wedstrijden op zondag pittig mede door de harde tegenwind. Maar niet getreurd, er is weer hard gestreden.
Na deze inspanningen zijn alle bootjes in sneltreinvaart op de botenwagen gepuzzeld en kon Yuri rustig naar Amsterdam rijden.
Het was weer heerlijk dat Gentse geroei.

Gents geroei

This alliteration took place on the weekend of May 9/10. With a fully packed and decorated boat trailer, all the youth and competitive junior rowers moved to the campsite in Ghent to have a lot of fun. The boats were rigged up super fast with all the rowers together, here and there even using human trestles. After this hard work, a great rowing session could be enjoyed in many different combinations.

Our youth stars blasted across the course for 1000m every time, while the competitive juniors all rowed just over 2000m. It’s true, and as for how that works, well… 😊. The heats flew by, each being a race in itself. For each event, the final result was determined based on all the times rowed in the heats. It is worth mentioning that Loïs van Dis managed to win the girls’ U19 field in the single scull on both days. A very impressive performance in this international field. Another top performance came from the youth rowers’ supervisors: getting nine skiffs onto the course in 15 minutes with just five parents! And last but not least, our youngest competitive rowers Veerle Booij and Lynn Fontein won a medal together.
At all the races, the Willem 3 members cheered each other on loudly, running along the course from the nice tent, but always with a lot of noise. All this commotion makes you hungry, but Sue had once again arranged a delicious BBQ—truly amazing.
After a (somewhat) short night, the races on Sunday were tough, partly due to the strong headwind. But don’t worry, they fought hard again.
After these efforts, all the boats were puzzled onto the boat trailer at lightning speed, and Yuri could drive to Amsterdam in peace.
It was wonderful to experience that Ghent rowing again.
